Bulbs are simply the easiest things to grow in the garden, as once planted there is almost no effort needed. Nature has kindly helped us out, as when the bulb formed last season on our grower's farms, it laid down starchy feed stores inside, so it has enough energy to burst into life next season.

They come in such an amazing of colours and exotic shapes and forms. In autumn, prepare for the signs of the following spring by planting tulips, daffodils, iris, crocus, or trendy alliums. From mid-December till May, plant lilies of all types, gladioli, and freesias, as well as native bluebells and snowdrops “in the green”. As the soil warms from March, try exotic dahlias, gingers, cannas and tuberose for tropical summer displays.

As a rough rule of thumb, plant bulbs with the top about twice the depth of the bulb below the surface and about the same apart. This means you can fill pots and soil with several different layers of bulbs – we call it “lasagne planting”

The beauty of bulbs is you can always find a small pot or spot to fill with a bulb or two. Feed them well once they shoot above ground, easing off as they flower. For best results, allow the bulbs to die down naturally each year, so they put maximum energy back underground for even bigger shows next year! Resist the urge to cut the leaves back!
